Gutemberg B. Guerra Filho
was born in Fortaleza, CE Brazil in 1973. He was educated at the Military
School of Fortaleza, ranked 4th in the 12th Brazilian
Mathematics Olympiad organized by the Brazilian Mathematics Society (SBM). He
received his BS degree in Computer Science from the State University of Ceará
(UECE), in 1995, and his MSc degree in Computer Science from the State
University of Campinas (UNICAMP), in 1998, where he was ranked 6th
in the 6th Competition of Master Thesis organized by the
Latin-American Center of Studies in Computing - UNESCO. He was a professor at
the State University of Ceará (UECE), the Federal University of Ceará (UFC),
and Lourenço Filho College. Currently, he is a PhD Candidate and Graduate
Research Assistant in the Department of Computer Science at the
University of Maryland (UMD) under the supervision of Dr.
Yiannis Aloimonos. He received the 2002 Outstanding
Teaching Assistant Award granted by the College of Computer, Mathematical and
Physical Sciences - UMD. His fields of interest include Computer Vision,
Computational Geometry, Combinatorial Optimization, and Geographical
Information Systems. His doctoral thesis involves a Human Activity Language (HAL)
for the symbolic non-arbitrary grounding of concrete concepts. The language
consists in phonology (i.e. kinetology), morphology, and syntax of the
grammatical space embedded in human movement. Each system is induced by
learning algorithms proposed for a human activity language. This learning and
linguistic framework is used to introduce sensory-motor intelligence as a new
step towards Artificial Intelligence.
