CSE-6392 Data Security and Privacy

Home Syllabus Notes Project Links

Topic:
Students must work individually and independently. You can decide the topic and the nature of the project. Nonetheless, the topic must be approved by the instructor before the end of the third week of the semester (Don't worry if you don't have a clue now. I will show you some exciting topics in the first few weeks of the course). Generally, any interesting topic related to data security and privacy will be approved. If you cannot find a topic, you can either talk to the instructor or use the following paper review topic.
  • (Paper review topic) Review a paper related to data security/privacy that is published in the last three years (2003 - now) on any of the following conferences and journals: SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, PODS, KDD, TKDE, TODS, VLDBJ, Security & Privacy, CCS, CRYPTO (Please refer to the Links page for the full names and links).
If you choose the paper review topic, you must reserve the paper with the instructor. If another student has already reserved the paper you select, you have to reselect another paper.

Proposal:
A one-page proposal is due at the end of the sixth week. In the proposal, you should clear state:

  • what you will definitely accomplish in the project (stage 0.8)
  • what you expect to accomplish in the project (stage 1.0)
  • what you will accomplish if you have time (stage 1.2)

Written Report:
The written report is due at the last class meeting. Your report should be at least 6 pages long, with letter-size paper, reasonable margin, single column, single space, and 11pt fonts. If you choose the paper review topic, your report should include

  • Summarization of the results in the paper.
  • Contribution of the paper to the literature.
  • Critical evaluation of the paper, including but not limited to any mistake you might find, what do you think of the assumptions, and what is your opinion of the contribution.
  • Suggestions for extensions and improvements.

Presentation:
Every student is required to present his/her project in front of the class. The presentation can be made anytime after the beginning of the sixth week. Nonetheless, you need to reserve your presentation date with the instructor by the end of the fifth week. Here are some suggestions for properly choosing your presentation date:

  • If you choose the paper review topic, you are strongly suggested to schedule your presentation sooner than later. Two reasons: 1) You can learn from the Q&A session and address some questions in your final report. 2) In the best interest of both you and me, you do not want to re-present a topic after I have covered it in a lecture.
  • If you choose your own topic, you can schedule your presentation relatively later to allow more time for research. However, please avoid last-minute rush. You could be much busier at the end of the semester than you think you would be.
Your presentation should be around 25-30 minutes long, and contain at least 10 slides.
