Summary

Reyes's attitude toward advising students can be summarized as follows:

"No more Mister Nice Guy."

Reyes will make you carry out your responsibilities. Listen to Reyes and do what he says. Reyes knows better than you.

Having Reyes serve as your research advisor represents the start of a long-term relationship. If your work with Reyes is satisfactory, you should expect to continue working (via research collaboration) with Reyes after you obtain your degree.

Reyes is opinionated, but welcomes the opportunity for meaningful discussion.

Before agreeing to serve as your research advisor, Reyes will investigate your academic performance and your résumé. If your résumé states that you seek a Teaching or Research Assistantship (TAship or RAship), please ensure that you indeed meet UTA CSE's requirements for those jobs (e.g., satisfactory GPA, pass test of English, etc.). Students wishing to obtain RAships under Reyes must have first successfully completed at least one course under Reyes.

A research project under Reyes requires at least 10 hours of labor per week. You should do this while registered for Thesis I and the Thesis II.

"Should I start graduate school right after completing my bachelor's degree or work between graduation and starting graduate school?"

You should obtain a full-time job in your chosen area of CSE between graduation and starting graduate studies. This will give you practical experience that will make graduate studies more meaningful.
