DOs and DON’Ts (climbing the ladder)
Do join your technical society
Don’t even think of taking business courses, let alone going for an MBA, for a long time
Do read technical articles and books, use the library, and attend technical meetings
Do learn to express yourself clearly in speech and writing
Do become the “local” expert in some area, even if it’s a fairly narrow one.
Don’t let yourself be led off into the fringes of engineering -- into the “-ilities” or into engineering admisitration
Don’t be in a hurry to become a supervisor
