There is a number of new applications, though, that cannot be modeled by relational databases very effectively. That is, if these applications were implemented in a relational system their performance would be unacceptable. These applications include: multimedia which use large objects, scientific databases such as the human genome database, computer-aided design, computer-aided software engineering, geographical information systems, data warehousing and online analytical processing for decision support, and office automation.
