Catalog Description and Course Objective:

Lab practicum experience for the analysis and design of combinational and sequential logic circuits. This course is a weekly lab practicum that begins in the second week of the semester.  This course provides hands-on laboratory experience for the CSE 2340 Digital Logic course.

Prerequisites: CSE 2340 (or concurrently)

Textbook: Carroll, Irwin, Nagle, and Nelson, Digital Logic Circuit Analysis and Design

Capilano Computing, LogicWorks 5: Interactive Circuit Design Software

Schedule:  See Dr. Tiernan’s website for the list of class topics, the semester schedule and the exam dates for the class.

Grading:              Lab practicum tasks                        80%

Lab Final                                             20%  (ABET Outcome task - Experimentation)

NOTE:  All practicum tasks are individual effort only unless explicitly specified otherwise by the class instructor.

Make ups must be arranged in advance and will be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor.

CHEATING, PLAGIARISM, or COLLUSION will not be tolerated.

Lab practicum tasks:  Lab practicum problems or tasks will be posted on the class website listed at the top of this page or handed out in the lab class.  Each lab practicum consists of

a)       the Logicworks design of the problem completed prior to the lab class,

b)       the physical implementation of all or part of that design during the lab class as specified by the class instructor,

c)       verification of the implementation by the lab instructor, and

d)      submission of the lab report for each practicum using the required report format.

Any missing step of the lab practicum may result in a grade of zero (0) for that lab practicum.  Each practicum task will be graded on a number of factors. Additional procedural information on lab practicum tasks may be handed out or made available on the website as required.

Every lab practicum task has a given due date. Task late turn-in/make up policy is at the discretion of the course instructor and require approval documented by e-mail.

Lab practicum tasks must be individual effort.  The Statement of Ethics you will find on the class website details the definitions of collusion, plagiarism, and academic dishonesty in CSE.

At least 75% of the required lab practicum tasks must be submitted in order for a student to pass CSE 2140 with a C or better.  All required tasks must be submitted in order to have the possibility of making a grade of A.

Lab Final Exam/ABET Outcome task:

Material covered on the exam will be based on the practical class experiences and required preparatory work for the lab practicum tasks.  The final exam will assess the student’s ability to perform an experiment using the understanding gained from the lab class.

Undergraduate students achieving a semester grade of C or better, but failing the experimentation assessment (below 60%) and documenting their circumstances will be assigned a semester grade of I (incomplete) and may re-attempt the assessment in the next semester.  If the assessment is then passed, the semester grade will be changed from I to the achieved grade.

If a student notifies the instructor IN ADVANCE, then an early make-up exam MAY be arranged at the discretion of the instructor. The instructor's decision is final. All exams may be kept by the instructor.

Miscellaneous:          The class syllabus, schedule, and other information will be available on my website as it is developed.  You are responsible for checking the website regularly for information such as due date changes and practicum tasks.

Before census day you must e-mail to tiernan@uta.edu the following information:

Full name, e-mail address to be used for class distribution list (this must be an e-mail address that you CHECK regularly and preferably a UTA address), and any special information you would like me to have about you.  The subject line for this e-mail should be “CSE2140 Distribution List Info”

Additional class assistance is offered through weekly office hours for the course instructor and the TA(s)

If you require accommodation based on disability, I would like to meet with you in the privacy of my office during the first week of the semester to ensure that you are appropriately accommodated.

Any student may drop with a ‘W’ until the final drop date for any reason other than cheating.  However you should come discuss your performance in the class if you are considering dropping.

Grading issues:         Requests for re-evaluation of grades are limited to seven (7) calendar days after the graded activity is returned. Every graded activity submitted for regrading must be given to the instructor (exams) or lab instructor (tasks) in its entirety and will be completely regraded. Activities will not be re-evaluated in the classroom or during the lab.

Grade replacement policy (for students under catalogs prior to Fall 2006) Applications for replacing the grade in a course are available in the Registrar's office and must be turned in to the Registrar before Census Day of the semester in which the course is being retaken.  There is a limit of 10 hours of grade replacement for a student.

Grade exclusion policy (for students under catalogs from Fall 2006 to present) Applications for excluding the grade in a course are available in the Registrar's office.

Semester grades will be available via the UTA website or by calling SAM (272-2SAM), after the Registrar has completed processing the semester grades.

Ethics and Academic Integrity:

A Statement of Ethics is provided on the class website for you to print, read, sign, return, and follow. Violators of the ethics code will be reported to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and penalties will be levied as described in the Statement of Ethics.
