OPPORTUNITY FOR SUMMER EMPLOYMENT FOR COMPUTER SEIENCE/MATH STUDENTS IN NIST INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY
PROJECT: Enhancing multi-way combinatorial software test generation tools

    Background:
Combinatorial software testing has been found to be useful. Testing all possible combinations in impractical even for modest software. A subset of combinations that covers all t-test combinations at least once is called a covering array (CA) of strength t. Test suites based on CAs provide a reasonable trade-off between testing effort and quality assurance. A study of actual faults conducted by NIST showed that (in the types of software that were investigated) about 95% involved 4-way combinations. Further, almost all faults could be detected by 6-way testing. Thus test suites based on covering arrays of strength up to t = 6 are need. The available algebraic methods are generally limited to homogeneous covering arrays for t = 2 and 3. No practically useful tools for non-homogeneous arbitrary configurations for up to t = 6 are available.

This project has the following objects:
    (1) Develop efficient and scalable computer tools to generate test suits that assure up to 6-way coverage for combinatorial software testing. The number of parameters may be arbitrary and they may have different values and various constraints.
    (2) Integrate algebraic combinatorial and computational methods to improve the tools.
    (3) Investigate integration of 'combinatorial testing', 'model checking', and other tools to develop automatic software testing tools.
    (4) Demonstrates successful application of the tools in particular applications of interest.

Background information is available at http://csrc.nist.gov/pets/
At this time this project is a collaboration between NIST, University of Texas at Arlington, and George Mason University at Fairfax Virginia.

    Tasks:
We have developed two prototype tool, called Fire-Eye (FE) and Paint-Ball (PB), to support multi-way combinatorial testing for non-homogeneous arbitrary configurations. The Fire-Eye and Paint-Ball covering array generators were developed in Java and C respectively. FE produces approximately optimal results but run time considerations make it difficult to use beyond moderate number of parameters, depending on interaction level and number of values per variable. PB is sub-optimal, but can produce covering arrays when the number of variables is very large. Both tools are working well but there is no easy to use interface. This will be needed if we wish to make these tools available to industry and government. Our goal is to provide an intuitive, user-friendly interface that lets users enter information about their test parameters, then produce covering arrays in formats that can be used in testing. Users should be able to enter data, estimate run time for the two algorithms, choose an algorithms (or have the tool choose for them), then start the run. If time permits, the cluster implementation of PB should be integrated as well.

The program will be conducted at an NSF supported REU Site in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington(UTA). The student participants will investigate problems related to information extraction, model learning, and decision making, in sensor-rich environments for safety and security. These projects will be performed in the larger context of a multi-disciplinary research project, performed under the umbrella of IRIS and MavHome, aimed at designing control software, as well as hardware resources in an intelligent, sensor ?rich environment in order to provide valuable services to the inhabitants, and for predict and address threats, to provide support for security, to augment the infrastructure, and for environment protection. The research will be performed under the supervision of a UTA faculty member and in collaboration with a number of graduate students.

    Program Schedule and Activities:
This REU program consists of a 10-week Summer session, from June 4 to August 9, 2007. The student participant are expected to take a 3-credit hour seminar course, as part of this program, during the 2007 Summer session at UTA. Non-UTA students will be required to enroll at UTA as summer students and are encouraged to arrange, through their home institutions, for transfer of these credit hours towards their degree programs. During this program, the students are expected to participate in both individual and team research activities, report on their progress, and attend weekly group meetings.

    Stipend:
Each recruited student will receive a stipend of $4,000 and an additional allowance of $500 to cover UTA tuition and registration for the Summer course. Student from a University other than UTA also receive a travel and accommodation supplement of $700 to compensate for additional travel expenses as well as room board. Upon acceptance the REU program will supply each student with the necessary documentation to enroll for the summer course and assistance will be available to help in the search for accommodation. The students who drop out of the program, or whose assistantships are terminated due to unsatisfactory performance, will not receive the remainder of their stipend from the point of termination of their research assistantship.

    Programmer (Feb. 06. 2007)
I was instructed to email you concerning a project I have which require a programmer. I am a UTA grad (undergrad and grad) and have started a local forensic testing laboratory, Integrated Forensic Laboratories (IFL) here in the metroplex. As far as I can tell, it is the first full service, private, accredited criminal forensic testing laboratory in the nation.

I need to build a LIM (laboratory information management) system. This will be based on Microsoft Access. The LIMS will be on a Server 2000 system with five clients. I have researched several vendors that sell such products, but they are too big and too expensive for my requirements.
